About Essence de ProvenceI’ve always found the French language enchanting, but after my first visit in 1994, I knew that there was something special about Provence. I could not get over the beautiful countryside, the light and intense colors that Van Gogh captured in his paintings, and the warmth and “joie de vivre” exuded in the daily life of the people. I brought back a dried lavender bouquet. The beautiful flowers and memorable scent made this the perfect souvenir of my favorite place. On subsequent visits I brought along empty suitcases to fill with great things from the local markets. Eventually suitcases were not enough and despite a French trucking strike that ended the day before the pick up, a large shipment of lavender was sent from the farm to my home by freighter. This annual shipment continues today and is coordinated according to the annual harvest. The lavender is harvested by hand with a sickle at the peak of flowering, usually the 2nd week in July. It is then dried naturally in an old stone barn until September when it is boxed and shipped overseas to me. Not all lavender from France is this color. This “producteur” has won numerous regional awards for the special indigo color. It is amazing to me that no dyes or perfumes are added and that this rich hue occurs naturally. Cleopatra dabbed lavender oil on her wrists, our grandmothers stashed sachets in their glove drawers and today lavender is still all the rage. So many of our products have multiple uses. Look for the lavender flower on the site for helpful tips on how to enjoy your lavender to the fullest. If you have the time, please enjoy the tour section, and browse the recipe section which will be changed occasionally. I feel very fortunate to be able to share my interest in herbs, the French culture and these great products with so many others who share my passion. Lavender is the Essence of Provence. I welcome your comments. Beth |
